Wedding Photography

So you are looking at hiring a wedding photographer to capture the most important day of your lives, whether that person will be me, or someone else. I would like to give you some pointers as to what to look for and the red flags. Wedding Photography is a unique service, many photographers provide their own tailored services to which they think the client requires, in all honesty this complicates things when choosing the right photographer. Don’t you agree?
Let us discuss the equipment that a professional photographer should use and what they should bring to a wedding. In all honesty, I could list hundreds of things, items that you wouldn’t even notice they had on them. But, let us keep it simple by going over the basics. A wedding photographer should have multiple lenses for various types of shots, be it a group photo, or a close up of the bride and groom. Having these in you kit back gives the photographer the flexibility to adjust to any given circumstance throughout the day. It is a must. Also something else to consider, even though rare if your equipment is looked after and cleaned, lens malfunctions do happen. If a photographer turns up to your wedding with only one lens and they experience a malfunction during the ceremony, you are not going to get any photographs from the photographer. Immediate red flag.
A contract, a written contract between the photographer and you the client(s). Again this is basic, but vital when delivering a professional service. It covers the wedding day from start to finish. What service is the photographer providing to you, how will the photos be delivered to the client, cost of the service and do they offer payment plans, wedding date, wedding venue, how many guests, special tasks from the bride and groom, etc. What products will you receive and when.. You get the idea.
One aspect is often overlooked and in my experience this can either make your photos or break them, let me explain. If you hire a photographer who is shy, lacking confidence, unsure to what he/she are doing then I guarantee that this will show through your photos, it isn’t good. On the other hand if you get a photographer who is over confident, loud and obnoxious then they will tend to cause anxiety and stress amongst your guests, this again will show up in your photos. Your photographer should be polite, confident in his/her work, understand the key moments of the day, approachable so guests can ask for their photo without them feeling uncomfortable, the relationship between the photographer and the clients should be united, as one, working together in harmony.
I appreciate this is a lengthy and heavy worded post, but I think it is important for someone who is looking for their perfect photographer to know what they are looking for and to what they can expect. If you have read this far, then please stick with me.
Preparation, at all weddings, the bride and groom have a lot on their plate with making sure all service providers are on the same page, guest invites, paying the companies and so on. The last thing a bride and groom need is a photographer who constantly bombards them with questions because they haven’t got all the information in the initial phase. All wedding photographer should offer a consultation prior to booking to go over the finer details, I am an Army Veteran, fine details is what I am all about but for some, this doesn’t come second nature and can cause the couple added stress and anxiety when they already have enough of it. Your wedding photographer should make your day easier, simplified service and packages, a contract that doesn’t need a lawyer to understand.
Does your photographer provide a backup plan? What happens if your photographer suddenly become unwell the day before your wedding day? Trust me, it happens. What happens if… What happens if… These are the questions you need to be asking your photographer, be polite but ask the difficult questions. If your photographer struggles to answer them straight away then walk away, they haven’t got you covered but are simply generating an answer so that you hire them, don’t be fooled.
